Excellent article. I was at that Manchester gig and I think Either/Or and XO are his strongest works, but thank you for reminding me of his earlier albums which I will dig out and enjoy again. He is much missed here.
They're my most listened to of his albums too, Kal. But I heard the reissues of Roman Candle and Elliott Smith first, round about the time that XO was released (I think Domino re-issued them as a double CD... that's certainly how they arrived in our office).
My holy grail of radio is the Manchester interview. I'm still hoping someone taped it. Our archive from back then is patchy, to say the least.
Elliott’s the only musician I ever followed on tour. He meant the world to me.
